How to Track Your Vehicle During Transport: What to Expect and What to Ask

You've booked transport and your car is on a trailer somewhere between here and there. Here's what real-time tracking looks like in auto transport — and what to realistically expect.

What 'Real-Time Tracking' Actually Means

Auto transport tracking is not Amazon package tracking. Your vehicle is on a truck driven by a human on public roads, not a parcel in a conveyor system with barcode scans every 30 minutes. 'Real-time tracking' in this industry means: your broker or coordinator can contact the carrier for a location and ETA update, and the carrier can provide their approximate current position and estimated arrival. Some carriers have GPS tracking on their trucks — many don't.

What Updates to Expect

From a good broker, you should receive: confirmation when a carrier is assigned, notification when the vehicle is picked up (with the pickup BOL), one or more in-transit updates on multi-day shipments, estimated delivery window 24 hours before arrival, and notification when the carrier is approaching for delivery. At Conveyed, your dedicated coordinator provides these updates proactively — you don't need to chase them.

GPS Tracking vs. Phone Updates

Some larger carriers run GPS-equipped trucks and can share a live tracking link. Most owner-operators and smaller carriers rely on phone check-ins with the broker. Both methods work — the key is not the technology but the broker's responsiveness. A broker who returns your call within an hour with a location update from the driver is more valuable than a GPS dot on a map with no context.

When to Worry (and When Not To)

Don't worry if: you don't hear anything for 24 hours during transit (the driver is driving), the estimated delivery window shifts by a day (weather, traffic, other deliveries). Do worry if: you haven't received any update in 48+ hours during transit, the broker stops responding to calls and emails, or the delivery window passes with no communication. A silent broker is a bad sign. At Conveyed, we proactively reach out — you should never have to chase us for an update.
